Back in the fall of 1987, at local radio station WFRM, in the Allegheny mountains of North Pennsylvania, Rich started guitar with Ken Cartwright.  From age nine to seventeen he studied with Dr. Pablo Cohen, the professor of guitar at the Ithaca College of Music and during his teenage years he attended festivals at Domaine Forget, Interlochen and The Berklee College of Music and performed in masterclasses of Nigel North, The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet and Eliot Fisk. This prepared Rich Barry for The Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University. Upon admission he was awarded the prestigious Rose and Leon J. Neilburg Scholarship and a full graduate teaching assistant scholarship.

While at Peabody, Rich studied with the esteemed pedagogue and performer Julian Gray, the current chair of Peabody's guitar department.  In 2007 Rich graduated with a Masters of Music and Guitar Pedagogy and a double Bachelors of Music and Music Education. In the fall of 2011 Rich performed at the second annual National Cultural Heritage Exchange in Washington DC for the National Endowment for the Arts and The President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities

Some of his notable past performances include NBC Universal Cable's 20th anniversary “Erase the Hate” , The 32nd National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Vigil, USA Today's "Make a Difference Day" hosted by Andy Cohen and Lester Holt and “Sunset on the Hudson” hosted by Martha Stewart. He has donated his time and performances with outreach work through the Creative Access, The Peabody Institute, Zade Dirani of UNICEF, Face to Face Guitar, The Ronald McDonald Foundation and The Charlotte R. Bloomberg Children’s Center of the Johns Hopkins Hospital. He has served as a member of the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance where he has volunteered his performances for community cultural events of the Jewish Museum of Maryland and the Yale and Peggy Gordon Performing Arts Center.

Since 2007 Rich Barry has given over 2000 performance throughout the United States from Washington DC, New York, Boston, Ashville, Tampa, Denver, Los Angeles, Nashville, and Miami to global gigs in Toronto, Montreal, Tokyo, Revlakic, Amsterdam, The Azore Islands of Portugal, The Canary Islands of Spain, and Holland.
